Fabric Technologist

Job Summary

A Fabric Technologist works closely with the Production and Research Development team, product developers  and suppliers, and is responsible for all issues related to fabric from quality checks to sourcing and price negotiations.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Responsible to ensure fabric meet the requirements of ECCO, working with ECCO quality systems and developing new fabric ideas suitable for a season’s collection.
  • Ensure fabric is fit for purpose and that the fabrics pass all tests required for the product. Fabric weave and fiber defects, color conformity and finish are all tested.
  • Travelling both national and internationally to source fabrics from mills and suppliers, and to check the production quality.
  • Conducting risk assessment and analysis review of new fabrics and synthetic with focus on Aesthetics, performance and durability.
  • Identify testing and due diligence requirements based on type of fabrics, end use and process route in shoe DIP production, process of ECCO.
  • Implementing specifications for the new fabrics and synthetic in consultation with DK technologists based on ECCO performance standards and test results.
  • Assess supplier capabilities and provide inputs to the product brand, R&D and sourcing teams in terms of sourcing the right fabric from the right source.
  • Work closely with fabric supplier and factories to extend support in product development and costing material.
  • Screen lab dips, fabric, color continuity cards and test report before forwarding to Production conformity against approved standards.
  • Carry out Fabric pre-production meeting with fabric mills, PU synthetic supplier on quality standards
  • Commercial acceptability or non-acceptability of test results.
  • Mill evaluation, supplier training and performance management through continuous feedback and periodic review of mill performance and work towards continuous improvement in fabric quality
  • Maintain most updated fabric and synthetic library and relevant information at all times.
  • Trouble shooting, follow up.
  • Critical path management work within the demands of the critical path to achieve on time product launches in conjunction with product developer and material development to production listing of new synthetic and textile materials.
  • Relationships – establish and maintain good links with agents and raw material suppliers in order to provide comprehensive service.
  • Fabric PU Synthetic – to resource appropriate fabrics/components/trims.
  • Sourcing knowledge – demonstrate a sound knowledge of established and well reputed supply routes the Far East arena. Encompassing fabric suppliers, PU Synthetic upper suppliers.
  • Advising production colleagues on technical aspects of the business
  • Liaising with designers, and adapting designs to suit production methods
  • Making sizing pre-production with
  • Undertaking quality queries, including complaints, from customers
  • Producing non-woven materials
  • Identifying the latest fabric trends, developments and innovations
  • Develop man-made fibers and quality assessing natural fibers
  • Spinning fibers into yarn, and knitting or weaving yarn into fabrics
  • Overseeing the dyeing, printing and finishing processing
  • Ensuring quality in areas such as strength, durability, colorfastness, and water and chemical resistance
  • Sourcing fabrics
  • Evaluate manufacturing facilities and capabilities and provide targeted training to vendors to ensure they understand ECCO standards
  • Proactively develop and implement initiative to drive continuous improvement with our external and internal partners and and support opportunities to engineer products that helps reduce cost, reduce defect rates, improve Right first Time target and shorten production lead-time
  • Continue building up a successful Technical support function which is focused up-stream, partnering with our Design and Development teams, to embed quality and manufacturability into the process, starting with design hand-off
  • Provide technical support in class dye process to help drive cost mitigation through their manufacturing excellence project, including Production and Workplace Engineering , Material Utilization and setting up operator trainings
  • Establish best practice and introduce new process enhancement and technologies to support continuous improvement in dye house of fabrics
  • Contribute regularly to Group Sourcing and business strategies and ensure alignment with Supply Chain in managing the changes
  • Provide feedback and recommendations when fabric mills performing below ECCO quality requirements and help to raise the performance. 

Background of Education

  • Min. Diploma/Bachelor degree in Business Administration/Management or equivalent.


  • Minimum 2-3 years in the Fabric industry in similar position and 2-3 years in a fabric mill.
  • Formal textile technology qualification 
  • Excellent understanding of garment construction, fabrics and finishing
  • Knowledge and understanding of manufacturing techniques
  • Some specialization in R&D
  • Experiment with textiles to improve their look, feel, texture and durability
  • Undertake research to find new ways of using yarns
  • Develop chemicals that may be added to fabrics to make them more waterproof, flame-resistant or shrink-resistant

Industry Experts

  • Thorough knowledge of fabric types, construction, dyeing and finishing is required.
  • Good knowledge of local and international Yarn and Fabric supply base is essential
  • Knowledge of hazardous chemicals and RSL (restricted substance list)
  • Fabric price and lead time negotiation skills would be an added advantage

  • Fluent written and spoken English
